Summary & Discussion:
Ever since we were young, we were taught that it is important to eat calcium to build strong bones. But what most people don't know is that foods such as bagels, bread, cereal, rice, and pasta are actually bad for your bones. Apparently eating too much food made from grain can cause an "acid load", otherwise known as an abnormal amount of acid, which may lead to bone and muscle damage. But don't worry, there is an easy remedy. To prevent an acid load, all you need to do is even out the amount of "grain food" you eat by eating more fruits and vegetables. This can neutralize the effect on your bones; it is especially essential for the elderly! Recent studies have shown that 50% of women and 25% of men over the age of 50 are affected by osteoporosis (literally "porous bones"). This a disease in which people's bones become extremely fragile and are more likely to break than an average person. I think this is an important issue. Not eating the right foods can be very harmful, especially for adults, in the long run. When people get older there bones and muscles naturally get weaker, but by not eating right, this process can be accelerated. Losing bone also increases the chance for fractures, and that is probably why the elderly tend to break their hips as they age. In addition, this can also affect children. For example, a lot of kids who play sports are told to eat lots of carbs for energy. But in reality, too many carbs can be bad for you.
