CSB #7: Overexposure to sun can cause eye damage

Summary & Discussion:

Imagine this. It is summer and you just want to get outside and hang out with your friends. As you walk outside, the light from the sun stings your eyes. Even though you forgot your sunglasses, one day without them won't hurt...or will it? Although many people are unaware of this, as it gets sunnier outside (especially during summer) the bright rays of the sun can be extremely harmful to your eyes. Just like we use sunscreen for UV protection for our skin, a good pair of sunglasses can do the same for your eyes. For example, Dr. Keiki Mehta, an ophthalmologist, says that, "Overexposure to ultraviolet light is thought to be a cause of cataracts, retinal damage and other eye problems." In addition, because many people like to go swimming during the summer, Mehta also includes that it is important to wear goggles while in the pool. The increased amount of chlorine in pool water can often lead to irritated and red eyes. Based on past experiences, I completely agree with Mehta. I often go out into the sun without sunglasses and my eyes do tend to sting after a while. In addition, because my sister plays water polo and therefore is not permitted to wear goggles, I know that overexposure to chlorine can aggravate the eyes. Although taking good care of your eyes is always important, this article has taught me that one should take extra care during the summer.
